Astragalus and Cold Sore Treatment

There are several natural and man made medications to reduce the duration or symptoms of cold sores.

Some are available without a prescription (over the counter), and others require a prescription from a doctor. Some are topical (meaning that they are creams or ointments rubbed directly on the sore), and others are taken in pill form.

Over-the-counter (OTC) topical medications: Most topical OTC products provide symptomaticrelief only. This means that they make people feel better but they do not decrease healing time. Using topical anesthetics that contain benzocaine (5% to 20%), lidocaine (0.5% to 4%), tetracaine (2%) or dibucaine (0.25% to 1%) will help relieve burning, itching, and pain. Examples are Lipactin® gel and Zilactin®. It is important to keep in mind that these topical agents have a short duration of action, usually only lasting 20 to 30 minutes. Skin protectants, such as allantoin, petrolatum, and dimethicone-containing products help keep the lesion moist and prevent cracking of the lesion. Sunscreen-containing lip balms may also help additional outbreaks if the sun is a precipitating factor. For additional pain relief, using ibuprofen or acetaminophenmay be beneficial. Do not apply any topical steroids, such as hydrocortisone, to the lesions.rash and itching at the site of application.

Using creams like Docosanol 10% cream may decrease healing time when applied at the first sign of recurrence (for example, tingling sensation).  It is recommended to apply Docosanol five (5) times per day until the lesion is healed; possible side effects include

Natural remedies exist as well.  Astragalus has been shown to be beneficial in humans to reduce the number and severity of cold sores. Astragalus root has been tested repeatedly in Germany and China but has not met any human trials necessary to make legal claims in the US.

Vitamins the Silent Killer; Can people OD on Vitamins?

YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT PEOPLE CAN OD ON VITAMINS.
In a recent e-mail to our customers, Sure Nature shared that research has shown that too much Vitamin C might lead to iron poisoning, and the reason for this is that Vitamin C enhances iron absorption.  Research has also shown that too much Vitamin D leads to hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia.  Research has shown that too much Vitamin A can be harmful to bones and skin, causing weakness and brittleness, even leading to fatigue and vomiting, at levels of 20-25,000IU’s per day.  Research has shown that too much Vitamin E, over 800 IU a day, may interfere with the body’s ability to clot blood, posing a risk to people taking blood thinners (anticoagulants).  All of this means that you shouldn’t just blindly walk into a grocery store or vitamin store and pick up three bottles of vitamins to compare ingredients and prices.  Sales research has shown that people buy almost anything based on emotion and comparison of like characteristics of a product.  This means that if you are considering buying almost any product, you subconsciously identify the three alternatives and group them based on similarities.  Then, we tend to choose the alternative that is the most unlike the other two.   Think about vitamin stores and vitamin isles of grocery stores.  You might walk down the isle and choose vitamins based on price, or on the color of the label, or the amount of Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or Vitamin D.  But given that these vitamins might just be a commercialized marketing weapon, you should consider the overdose factor in which ones will do you more harm than good.  The best advice anyone can take in is to consider the analogy of prescription drugs.  You wouldn’t take a prescription without a good explanation from and faith in your doctor, would you?  Then it might slowly save your life to consider who wrote the vitamin formula before you take a real downer…

Cold Sore Treatment

Cold Sores, also known as fever blisters, are a painful infection caused by the herpes simples virus-type 1. Cold Sores are capable of showing up anywhere on a person’s body, but most likely appear on the gums, the outside of the mouth, lips, the nose, cheeks, or fingers. Once the blisters form, they break and ooze.  A yellow crust will develop and will eventually slough off, revealing new skin underneath.

Cold Sores can last from seven to ten days normally.  About 90 percent of all people will experience a cold sore at least once in their lifetime. The first occurrence is typically the worst.  Children who get cold sores and become infected could get seriously ill.  After the first infection, many people develop antibodies and never have another cold sore.

Approximately 1 in 4 affected by the virus actually have repeated outbreaks.  Cold sores are generally not serious, but the infection could be life threatening to someone that would have AIDS, or whose immune system is depressed by other disorders or medications. The infection from a cold sore could cause blindness if it spreads to the eye.

Symptoms to look for when a person is suspicious that they have a cold sore would be fluid filled blisters or red, painful sore on or near the mouth or the fingers.  Swollen sensitive gum of a deep red color is also very common. A fever, flu-like symptoms and swollen lymph nodes in the neck often accompany the first attack of a cold sore.

Reoccurring sores usually do no produce those symptoms.

The causes of cold sores is by the herpes simplex virus, which is transmitted by such forms of contact as kissing an infected person or sharing eating utensils, towels or razors.  Also a person with a cold sore that performs oral sex on another can pass it on, and give that person genital lesions.

Once the virus enters the body it may have a break out years later or at the original site of entry. You may notice certain things before an attack such as itching or sensitivity to the site. The virus could be triggered by certain foods, stress, fever, colds, allergies, sunburn, and menstruation.

There is no cure for cold sores, but a person can alleviate the pain it causes. A person can avoid eating spicy or acidic foods, apply ice and use over-the-counter remedies. Using medicines that contain numbing agents such as phenol will help to reduce cracking and soften scabs.

Life’s Daily MultiVitamin

Vitamins sometimes get accused of causing expensive urine.  Sometimes when I’ve taken vitamins, the more I take, the more “Gold” I end up flushing.

So… assuming others share this concern about how much of the vitamin the body is actually digesting and using, I set out to develop a new multi-vitamin that didn’t make me make so much Gold.

Life’s Daily MultiVitmian is the result.  It is a mixture of green foods, herbs, vitamins, and minerals and in doses that make sense not ten thousand times the recommended daily amount that other so called vitamins pack into their fat little pills.

Life’s Daily MultiVitamin is not a super powerful knock you out of your sock vitamin.  It is gentle on your stomach because it has more than raw minerals, the food and herbs are things your body can chew on while absorbing the minerals.  Our body’s can hardly use pure raw materials anyway, in most cases ‘healthy bodily function’ comes from a mixture of all sorts of processes.  Our body’s use fat, protein, raw materials, and such to do things like rebuild skin, bone, excrete waste, build muscle, maintain mood and emotion, so, why shock the body?

I take two pills per day.  One in the morning and one in the afternoon because it spreads out the nutrients. We don’t eat all of our food in one sitting, so why nourish the body with one shock?

Our immune system is also a great cold sore treatment, all by itself, and since Sure Nature started with ImmunaSure and a cold sore treatment, we wanted a vitamin to augment our astragalus based immune product.

Cold Sore Treatment with Vitamins now?

Here are a few articles that I am posting on the blog, the author information is posted below each one.

Cold Sore Relief with Vitamins and Supplements

If you’re one of the millions of people who have ever had a cold sore, then you understand how painful and embarrassing they can be. Cold sores aren’t pretty. They usually show up just around the edges of the lips and can last for days or even weeks if left untreated. If you suffer from cold sores often, here are some helpful facts about cold sores and some easy ways to treat them.
What Causes Cold Sores?
The herpes simplex virus, or herpes virus 1, is the primary cause of cold sores. Herpes virus 1 is easily contracted and is present in about 90 percent of adults. Though many people suffer from frequent cold sores, some with the virus do not have outbreaks. Once infected with herpes virus 1, the virus remains in the body for life. Herpes may be dormant in the body for a while and then suddenly become active and cause outbreaks of cold sores.
The herpes virus 1 is very contagious and can be acquired through infected items such as eating utensils, a toothbrush, razors, dishes, towels, etc. It can also be sexually transmitted, even through kissing. Cold sore outbreaks can be triggered by a number of factors: emotional stress, illness, fever, pregnancy, chapped lips, menstruation, excessive sunlight exposure, immune system deficiencies, or other causes.

Cold Sore Treatments

One of the most effective ways to treat cold sores for the long term is to help prevent frequent outbreaks through vitamins and supplements. There are many natural supplements on the market today to strengthen your immune system, such as ImmunaSure, a natural multivitamin that was co-created by Dr. John Sherman. Multivitamins for herpes treatment often have a blend of several natural ingredients and herbs to help give the immune system a boost. A healthy immune system will help to fight the virus and prevent outbreaks. Even if an outbreak occurs, the severity may be lessened simply by keeping your immune system strong.

Once an outbreak of cold sores occurs, there are also products to help relieve the pain of the sores such as Neosporin (R) and many cold sore ointments to help alleviate outbreaks more quickly. During an outbreak, you should avoid citrus foods, salty foods, or other foods that can irritate the cold sores. Keep the sores clean and covered with pain-relieving ointment. Apply ointment at night before bedtime to allow time for healing as you sleep. Also, avoid touching or squeezing the sores, and wash your hands frequently to keep the sores from spreading.

Besides taking vitamins and supplements for immune system strength, be sure to exercise and eat a healthy diet to keep your immune system healthy. Get plenty of sleep, and drink lots of water. Avoid excess sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. Also, avoid getting too much sun, especially on the face. Apply sunscreen to your facial skin and even on the lips if possible.

Natural supplements to help lessen and/or prevent cold sore outbreaks are readily available online. You no longer have to suffer and go around worrying about your next possible herpes outbreak. With a stronger immune system, your body will be well equipped to keep your herpes cold sores at bay!

Cold Sore Treatment Vitamins?

Here is another of the articles I am adding here.

Vitamins and Supplements Can Combat Herpes Naturally

As the number of people with the herpes virus has increased, so has the research to determine the causes and effects of the virus. There are also many possible treatments available today in the form of vitamins and supplements as well as prescription medications. Many are turning to natural supplements for relief from outbreaks and to help lessen the severity of their herpes outbreaks.

The most prevalent attributing factor in herpes outbreaks is a weak immune system. The body’s immune system naturally works to fight off infections and viruses, but when it is weak, the immune system cannot do its job properly.

If you have the herpes virus, it can remain dormant in your body for long periods of time until it is triggered. Once it has been triggered, the herpes virus becomes active and your body may start displaying an outbreak in the form of cold sores (herpes virus 1) or genital herpes (herpes virus 2).

Once active, herpes weakens the immune system because the body is spending its energy fighting off the herpes virus. Meanwhile, this can cause you to be more susceptible to other infections and diseases. With a strong, healthy immune system, your body can fight the herpes virus and help prevent outbreaks or at least lessen the severity and frequency of their occurrences.

Natural Supplements for Herpes

Ideally, you’ll want to keep your body’s immune system up to par so you can combat herpes at all times and hopefully avoid as many outbreaks as possible. With vitamins and supplements, you can do this easily without visiting a doctor or pharmacy every time you experience an outbreak.

There are quite a few natural multivitamins that blend certain ingredients and herbs to help strengthen the immune system. One such product is ImmunaSure, which blends three main active ingredients to support immune system function. Its main ingredients are astragalus, lemon balm, and de-odorized garlic. This multivitamin was co-developed by Dr. John Sherman, a doctor who has helped treat thousands of patients with herpes, cold sores, and other immune disorders for 30 years.

Other supplements often used in the treatment of herpes or in strengthening the immune system include zinc, vitamin B complex, L-Lysine, colloidal silver, acidophilus, echinacea, olive leaf, vitamin A, vitamin C, spirulina, tea tree oil, and essential fatty acids.

It’s important to find the right blend for your body and for your specific needs. Some multivitamins work well with herpes virus 1 while others are better suited to help with herpes virus 2. Most vitamins and supplements contain a blend of multiple ingredients and herbs, not only one. Check labels to find out which ingredients are included in each multivitamin, and be sure to consult with your doctor if you have other health conditions or if you are taking other medications already. Let your doctor know what type of herpes natural supplement you wish to try and what ingredients are involved.

Vitamins and supplements will not cure herpes altogether, but they can make living with herpes much easier. You can now order natural supplements online to strengthen the immune system and start enjoying relief very soon!

Herpes and Atragalus root?

This article was posted by Majon, I am posting it here along with the other articles to make it easier to find.

Help Fight the Herpes Virus with Astragalus,

Vitamins and Supplements

When herpes virus triggers mild outbreaks, the astragalus membranaceus root blended with certain vitamins and minerals can possibly provide dependable, natural relief. According to some studies, astragalus can potentially act as an effective herbal treatment against the herpes virus 1 and 2. Though more testing is needed, astragalus has been used for medicinal purposes in Chinese medicine, and is usually recommended for herpes prevention rather than to treat a crisis.

Astragalus is now becoming more popular in modern day Western medicine. Vitamins and supplements on the market today such as ImmunaSure, which was co-created by Dr. John Sherman, blend astragalus with lemon balm and de-odorized garlic to create a powerful support for the immune system.

What is Astragalus?

Astragalus belongs to the legume family called Fabaceae and sub-family called Faboideae. Native to the Northern Hemisphere regions, astragalus is often called milk-vetch, goat’s-thorn, and locoweed. There are 2,000 species of herbs and shrubs in the Fabaceae family. The astragalus root comes from perennial plants that thrive in northern China as well as Mongolia. It has been used as a staple in Chinese medicine for centuries. Astragalus roots for medicine must be at least four years old and dried before they can be used as natural supplements.

Benefits of Astragalus

Astragalus root has several components that are believed to help strengthen the immune system. These are flavonoids, saponins, polysaccharides, astragalosides, and triterpenes. The root is believed to ward off infections and works by helping the skin to eliminate toxins from the body. Astragalus root can help reduce sweating and also acts as a mild diuretic. In America, studies have been conducted to show astragalus root can indeed help boost the immune system’s T-cells, even for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer.

Astragalus contains probiotics to help boost the body’s good bacteria in the digestive tract. Another benefit is that astragalus root helps to protect the adrenal cortex, a hormone-producing gland that affects stress levels in the body. Saponins in the root can help prevent blood clots that may lead to stroke or a heart attack.

Uses for Astragalus

Astragalus root can be blended in a natural supplement or multivitamin and taken orally in capsule form. It can also be taken in powdered form as a tea or tincture. Astragalus in ointments can be used topically to help treat exterior wounds and other skin ailments.

Important Note: Always consult with a doctor before using astragalus or other vitamins and supplements - especially if you have an auto-immune condition, are a transplant recipient, are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you are a hemophiliac. Astragalus may also react negatively to certain medications.

With strengthening of the immune system, the body will better be able to fight against herpes virus 1 and 2. Though there is no definite cure for herpes, the unwanted cold sores and other herpes symptoms can possibly be lessened with this remarkable root as a natural supplement!

astragalus vs. kryptonite

Every superhero has his fatal flaw. True invincibility, when you come right down to it, is a bore. If Lex Luther doesn’t have a fighting chance, where’s the suspense? Why would he even bother? Why would we? It’s the chink in the armor that feeds our fascination. That allows us to identify with the gods. So Superman’s super powers are undermined by kryptonite and Achilles has his heel (though one could argue his fatal flaw was actually inappropriate footwear – going to war in strappy sandals? what’s up with that?), and we’ll throw down $10.50 every time to watch these guys fight to overcome them.

Now, we mere mortals may aspire to superhero status, working 18-hour days, juggling kids, careers and eco-catastrophe, but super status doesn’t guarantee invincibility (unless you’re Dick Cheney – is that guy a cyborg, or what?). But we do have a superpower, our own personal superhero, if you will. And in its complexity and armament, it far surpasses anything Bruce Banner or Dr. Doom could create. It’s not a cape or x-ray vision or even shape-shifting (though I’d love that one - wonder powers unite!). Our superpower is our immune system, and all those DC and Marvel dudes got bupkis compared to this bad boy.

Think about it, your immune system defends you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that, every day, every minute, are trying to invade your body and take you down. But unlike Tony Stark’s power armature, your immune system protects you without your even noticing (like Wonder Woman’s invisible plane - cool.). It even protects you while you sleep. Did you know that your skin (the first line of defense in your immune system) secretes anti-bacterial substances? Oh yes. Otherwise you’d wake up looking like a well-aged piece of cheese. Most bacteria and spores that land on your skin die instantly (name a superhero with that power).

It’s when you do notice your immune system that you better watch your back. But frankly, by then, it’s too late. Your armor has failed. Your superhero’s goin’ down. Your fatal flaw has found its mark. For like all superheroes, your super powered immune system has a fatal flaw. True, it doesn’t have the glamour of a glowing green stalactite from outer space but in its humble bumbling way, it’s every bit as devastating. When it comes to your immune system, the fatal flaw is you.

Even with all its fortitude and intricacy, we lowly beings are able to undermine the genius of our immune systems each and every day with our bad habits and careless behavior. Smoking, drinking, stress, long workdays and little sleep, fast food and a faster pace, and perhaps most importantly, the mounting toxins we continue to introduce into our environment, are our villains. Some of these are easy for our immune system to handle, like that pesky cold or bug bite, but others are harder to fight off. Wouldn’t the Joker have a laugh fest if that golden tan you were so proud of turned cancerous and left you wondering how you’ll wear sunglasses without your nose?

For the most part, common sense can protect us from our fatal flaw. Eating right, getting enough sleep, moderate sun exposure and slowing down so we can actually see the flowers we’re trying to smell, allow our immune system to operate with near invincibility. But when common sense fails and, since we are only human, it usually does, finding a plug for that chink in our armor is like Spiderman’s web: you ain’t gonna swing without it.

And one sure way to plug that chink is with Immunasure from Sure Nature - www.surenature.com.
Not only does Immunasure complement building healthy immune system support, but it also contains what may very well be a superhero of its very own: astragalus. Sounds super doesn’t it? Captain Astragalus. Astragalusman. Okay, maybe not, but it does have immune enhancing properties that have been recognized and used for hundreds of years.

Astragalus, or Huang chi (them’s fightin’ words), is a plant native to Asia, whose root, when used medicinally, has been found to increase the production of immune cells as well as stimulating anti-viral activity. It’s been shown to reduce immune suppression following chemotherapy. It may also have a diuretic effect, lowering blood pressure and causing blood vessels to relax, thereby reducing the effects of heart disease. Studies also suggest that it may have renal protective effects. It’s been shown to reduce fatigue and may even combat the effects of senility.

Used for centuries in Chinese medicine to improve the overall function of the immune system, astragalus has only recently peeked the interest of western medicine. But Sure Nature is well ahead of the curve and with Immunasure, combines the immune enhancing properties of astragalus, with garlic, lemon balm, larch tree and Lactobacillus sporogenes, to produce a supplement that not only sharpens our immune system, but also helps to undermine that fatal flaw in our quest for invincibility, namely, ourselves.

Wonder powers unite!

To ImmunaSure or Not to ImmunaSure

This is my case for why taking an immune system booster like ImmunaSure is necessary in today’s day and age….or as the blog post title says….to ImmunaSure or not to ImmunaSure.

In today’s world, building and maintaining a healthy immune system takes more than healthy diet, exercise and good DNA - this is no longer enough, here’s why.

What did you have for breakfast this morning? What were you doing and where were you while you ate it? And how did you greet your day?

If you answered that, after yoga stretches and an invigorating run through the dewy fields of a pristine rural country-side, you had fresh squeezed orange juice from an organic orange you plucked from the tree with your own hand within the last 24 hours, ate a poached egg laid this morning by your free ranging hen, and a slice of toast made from fresh baked bread containing no preservatives, coloring agents, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical residues, and topped with hormone free, organic butter while sitting across from your beloved in a sun-drenched breakfast nook recounting your blissful night’s sleep as birdsong and sweet morning air drift through your open window with an unobstructed view of the horizon, then you may not need a vitamin supplement to maintain your healthy constitution.

But if, like me and the rest of America, you woke tired and cranky (and late), watched your kid spill his OJ (from concentrate) across your tax returns (you had to file for an extension again), listened to your wife (as she pried a smoking Pop Tart from the toaster) recount the various collection agencies that had called during the last week while you were on yet another business trip (missing your kid’s school pageant again), shaved in your rear-view mirror while holding a dangerously hot Triple Caramel Grande Latte (with whip) between your squishy spreading thighs as the pale yoke of your EggMcMuffin dripped onto your one good tie and you cursed the endless stream of brake lights disappearing before you into the gray green smog of the horizon, while the news radio buzz of war, unemployment, home-foreclosures, gas prices, melting ice caps, and Brangelina fried your over-taxed brain cells, you, like the rest of us, may need a supplement.

We are quickly becoming a nation of over-fed, over-medicated, overwrought, borderline automatons that are under-nourished, under-exercised, discouraged and dismayed. This is why products like ImmunaSure are necessary.

We suffer from an increasingly toxic environment that over-taxes our immune systems. The technology that for so long seemed to be benefiting us is gradually undermining our physical and mental well-being. Our car, TV and Internet culture has left 40% of us obese and 70% of us over-weight. Our corporate food culture has depleted the nutrients in our nation’s soil, producing food that has half the nutritional value it did 50 years ago and is no longer a product of nature, but of chemistry. We eat filler and waste and chemical byproducts disguised as food. We drive instead of walk. We zone out in front of television instead of reading (or having a conversation, god forbid) and squint harder and harder at our computer screens. Wonder why the incidence of cancer and other debilitating disease is skyrocketing?

65% of us no longer sit down to a family meal and almost 70% of us skip at least one meal a day and yet we’re the fattest nation on the planet. 40% report eating less than half the U.S. daily-recommended amount (USRDA) of vegetables and 60% the recommended fruit. Yet those USRDA standards are predicated on studies from 1968 when the fruits and vegetables we were eating had twice the amount of nutrition they do today.

A vitamin supplement like ImmunaSure is no longer a choice it’s a necessity.

We’ve all heard how supplements don’t replace a balanced diet, but neither, anymore, will a balanced diet give us the vitamins and minerals we need to stay healthy. A healthy immune system (supported with Sure Nature’s ImmunaSure, www.surenature.com) and a healthy constitution require a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement with green foods for nutrients and antioxidants. They are as necessary as clean air and water for our health and well-being. Just as reading a book instead of watching TV, sitting down with family or friends for a home cooked meal instead of take-out on the run and walking into the evening air to look at the stars will contribute to a healthier happier you.

What did you eat today, where were you when you ate it and how did you feel?

pay it forward

Okay, it was a lousy movie, but its premise was terrific and, strangely enough, may actually have health benefits; and its simplest expression, if you will, is a smile.

Psychologists have a theory called the facial feedback hypothesis that says our facial expressions produce feedback that affect not only our behavior and ability to express ourselves emotionally, but the behavior and emotional expression of others. We can actually improve our moods just by smiling; and by smiling, improve the moods of those around us.

Multiple research projects and studies have been conducted in support of this hypothesis and the results are fascinating. For instance, it’s been found that we undergo involuntary biological changes when instructed to mimic certain facial expressions: mimicking an angry face actually increases the flow of blood to the hands and feet in much the same way a person who is truly angry experiences increased blood flow. And a mimicked smile actually releases endorphins into our system making us feel better, happier. A smile is so powerful in fact, studies have found that it can actually be felt at the other end of the phone.

Who knew?

Another study found that 72% of us believe that people who smile frequently are more confident and successful (or crazy… oh wait, no, that’s just me.) Yet another study found that mimicking the face of someone else increased our empathy toward that person – a smile producing a smile.

My favorite study showed that participants holding a pencil in their mouths while viewing cartoons (forcing the mechanics of a smile), rated the cartoons funnier than those participants without the pencil. Maybe I should have had a pencil in my mouth when I watched PAY IT FORWARD, or better yet, a crowbar. Crack that smile right open.

So our smile is important and an actual tool of good health maintenance.

To keep our smiles healthy we need to keep ourselves healthy. Keeping our immune systems strong and fully supported will not only keep our smiles cold sore free (and by connection, the Herpes Simplex Virus at bay, http://www.surenature.com), but will improve our overall health and appearance. When we look and feel healthy we can’t help but smile, eliciting a smile from that passerby on the street who smiles at her co-worker who smiles at the coffee guy who smiles at the mailman and so on and so on and so on, paying forward our sense of health and well-being.

:-) Good to know.
